In the fall of 1986, NBC debuted a new sitcom entitled ALF. It centers around the Tanner family, who finds an alien crash-landing in their garage, having come from the recently-exploded planet Melmac. They decide to name him ALF and keep his presence a secret so that the U.S. Government could not take him away for experiments. The show eventually became one of the biggest hits of the season, finishing at #28 in the ratings.

Before then, an unaired version of the pilot was produced, featuring early title sequence graphics and scenes that weren't in the version that went to air (including an ending shot where ALF says "Be there!"). This version was never shown on television, but it was eventually released on the infamous (for including syndicated cuts of all episodes) 2004 DVD release of season one, released by Lionsgate.
